Fishing...sort of? [any] « Thread Started on Nov 30, 2008, 7:04pm »
Now how was it done again? The small white she-cat sat perched on the edge of the stream. Her golden orange gaze flickering to and fro as she followed some movement beneath the water's surface. As the fish twisted about, her tail began to flicker from side to side. Ears rounding foreword atop of her skull while she bent into a crouch. Clenching her jaw, she scowled, taking a step closer. Scowling a moment later when her shadow covered the school of fish and sent them scattering. A sudden swell of panic built up in her chest, if they got away how was she going to catch them then? Without thinking her hind legs heaved back, propelling her into the shallow depths and sending a spray of water through the air. Fox-dung it's cold! Her thoughts hissed, eyes scanning rapidly for the sign of fish.
Gotcha! Winterpaw thought, but the triumphant gleam in her gaze was short lived, for no sooner had she started zipping through the water than the fish went scattering again. Bits of dry fur along her backside bristled furiously, ears snapping back while she lifted a paw and struck at the water angrily. "Bah! this is useless!" She meowed out loud as a few drops of water pecked her right on the nose. Shaking her head back and forth, she turned to glare at the fish as they went further downstream. Grumbling under her breath the young apprentice whirled around and scampered out of the water and back onto the grassy banks again, giving her fur a rough shake in the process. Who needed fish anyways?

Eagletalon killed the fish with one swift bite, letting it lay limp next to him. He stared at it for a moment, blinking as memory rushed back to him. He was out with his apprentice, Firepaw then. She had caught her first fish- she was so proud. And he was proud of her too, having taught her well. His gaze lifted, and he gazed across the stream. Where was she now? Firesplash had always been the naughtiest apprentice and always knew how to get into trouble. He'd tried to warn her, but she didn't listen. And they took her, keeping her captive. Those rogues. Then Eagletalon let his eyes drift back in the direction of camp. He would've gone looking along with her brother Redstorm. Did she know her brother had gotten his warrior name? But he had a Clan to care for, and loyalty rooted him as deeply as an old oak tree.
He barely registered the apprentice nearby, and his ears failed to twitch when she cried out. He was lost in memory, thinking of his prior apprentice, and of his friend Redstorm. The genial tom was fiercely loyal, the one thing he had in common with his sister. He was also the most sincere cat Eagletalon had ever met. The entire lot of them, including the parents were pure at heart. But atfer a moment he shook his memories off. Turning to the apprentice, he stifled a snort of laughter. "Having trouble?" He rumbled, his amber-yellow gaze kind as he padded over to Winterpaw.

It took Winterpaw a moment to recognize that she was not alone with her brief but obvious failure. The sound of paw steps shifted her attention away from glowering at the stream and her ears immediately folded back sheepishly upon realizing it was Eagletalon. Embarrassed, the white she-cat scuffed her right mitt over the ground, sitting down as the feline's tail curved about her flank nervously. "Oh.. hi Eagletalon." She mewed. Stupid, you should have waited for him. What kind of apprentice are you? Her thoughts scolded, giving the warrior a small nod with her muzzle. "Yes..." But her voice seemed to find itself again and rolling her golden orange eyes the young cat let out a huff of breath.
"I just don't see the point. It's only fish." Winterpaw meowed almost absently. Her nose wrinkling at the notion while she stood up again. Head turning to the side to lick down a patch of wet fur sticking up along her shoulder. "Can't I just try bird or mice?" It had to be easier than this..right? Somehow Winterpaw couldn't seem to picture anything more jumpy than the mouse brained fish. Their slippery scales and smooth bodies didn't exactly allow much purchase for her smaller claws either. Which made her come to the conclusion that either the creatures where quite smart, or she was slower than a beetle. The latter idea didn't exactly give her alot of comfort.

Eagletalon eyed his apprentice with amusement. "Fish are a main source of prey for our Clan, Winterpaw. You must learn to catch them skillfully sooner or later." He explained firmly, though his gaze was kind. All the same, he nodded. "But I think a bird or mouse would do just fine for now." He allowed, and padded forward, flicking her ear with his tail. "Come on then, mice wouldn't hang around here." He sprang into some undergrowth, padding along a bare patch where many cats before him had traveled. Of course, he did nto leave his fish behind. He was carrying it in his mouth, when he scented vole. Dropping the fish and burying it, he soon was able to bury his vole as well. A good rpey-hunting day.

Winterpaw sighed in a crestfallen acknowledgement to what her mentor said. She knew it was true, but the she-cat still wasn't keen on the idea of lurking by the stream most of the day just to catch a meal. She'd rather of been leaping through the brush and running around. Childish, perhaps. But the young white feline was only six moons after all, and although she was eager to prove herself an able body of the clan, letting go of her kit like antics wasn't as easy as one might think. Forcing herself to look more serious, she puffed out her small chest and gave a grave look. "I understand. We'll fish tomorrow?" Winterpaw meowed as the large tabby brown tom cat tapped her lobe with his tail. She twisted around and began padding after him. Her ears giving a flick as she listened to the deputy's movements curiously.
Trying to walk carefully along the same trail rather than cause anymore commotion. Lithe hind legs springing back while she lept into undergrowth behind him and paused just a tail length behind. Seeing him catch the vole, her whiskers gave a twitch. Side stepping to sniff at the air, her mouth opened to taste for scents. Mouse... or was that vole? Her head tilted in uncertainty, but clenching her teeth together she dropped into a crouch and slunk along the earthen floor. Her stance was anything but perfect, and her tail kept moving from side to side on occasion, causing some twigs to rustle noisily. Hissing when she realized the creature had heard, she bolted foreword anxiously - but too late. The rodent escaped with a good head start. How come when he did it, it looked so.. easy? "Sorry... I thought I had it."

Eagletalon watched his apprentice fail once more in catching her prey. He gazed at her, waving his tail for her to come closer. "Practice makes perfect, you will get it in another try." He began mildly, blinking amber eyes. "But here's a tip. When you are hunting a mouse make sure you step lightly. The mouse will be able to feel you under its paws, just as you may feel me walking closer sometimes. Now, if you were hunting a vole, you would have to be quick. The vole will hear you, so you must be as quiet as possible, like hunting a bird." He explained. Then he crouched and stepped forward, taking all the weight off of his paws. "See that? Good mouse technique. Try it now." He instructed, and sat up as he wrapped his tail around his paws.

Winterpaw sighed, but nodded in understanding nonetheless. Trying to absorb every word her mentor had to offer as he demonstrated a proper stance. Her head tilted to the side and the white she-cat examined his footing carefully. "Alright." Allowing her ears to twist back, she gave her white fluffy pelt a brief shake before stretching her forelegs a bit. Step lightly. She reminded herself, taking a couple paw steps foreword quietly, her head lifted and a grin beamed across her feline features when she noted how quieter it was compared to before. Looking at Eagletalon her teeth flashed in a smirk, "Like this?" Taking care to not become distracted she turned her head back towards the foliage. Eyeing scanning for a smidgen of movement before moving foreword with the appropriate motions and pounced. Coming back with the fresh kill clamped between her teeth proudly.
